Best Paper Award

As part of efforts to maintain and raise the high quality of papers, the Sixth Sharjah Urban Planning Symposium will be awarding two prizes in separate categories:

"Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Qassimi International Prize" for the Best International Paper in Urban Planning to the value of 5,000 USD

"RICS Foundation Prize" in the GCC Author Category to the value of 2,500 USD

SUPS6 Best Paper Awards:

A total of 24 papers were submitted for consideration for the 'best paper prizes'. Of this GCC authors accounting for about 50%, many of which compete well with papers by international participants in terms of quality.

The prize for the Best International Paper (open to all participants) sponsored by His Highness has been awarded to Dr Narushige Shiode and Mr Paul Torrens for an innovative paper on modelling urban growth and urban dynamics in real and virtual environments.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Research Foundation prize for the best paper from the GCC countries has been awarded to Dr Souhail El Masri for his excellent paper on intelligent urban initiatives and prospects in Bahrain.

A new prize is offered by the Institute of Urban and Regional Planning and Design at the American University of Sharjah this year for papers on urban planning research and practice dealing with subjects relevant to Sharjah, the UAE, the GCC countries or the Arab World. It has been awarded to Dr Ahmed Abdalla Abdel-Ghany and Dr Zohair Hasan Zahid for their paper on identifying urban development priorities in Saudi Arabia.

Best Paper Award Criteria in Order of Importance:

1) Contribution to Knowledge
Papers should provide an original contribution to knowledge in one or more of the following:

Conceptual and theoretical development
Empirical findings
Policy development

2) Originality
Papers should be an original work by the author/s that are submitted to the SUPS 6 meeting in Sharjah, 6-8 April 2003. Any paper submitted for consideration of Best Paper Award should not have been published, submitted for publication, or presented anywhere else prior to SUPS 6

3) Quality of Debate
Papers should have a very high quality of debate in terms of the following:

Understanding of topic
Critical analysis of concepts, theories and findings
Consistency and coherency of debate

4) Methodology
Papers should have a strong methodological grounding both in terms of conceptual framework and fieldwork activity (if relevant
)

5) Depth of Research
Papers should be well researched in terms of existing literature with sufficient referencing of all sources used

6) Relevance to the Theme
Papers must be relevant to the announced themes of the symposium

7) Succinctness
Papers should be succinct in their discussion of ideas and presentation of their findings

8) Structure and Presentation
Papers should be well structured and presented in terms of logical sequence of sections and use of tables and figures (if relevant)
