Best Paper Communiqué

As part of our continuous efforts to enhance the quality of papers at the Sharjah Urban Planning Symposium and contribution to the broader discipline of urban planning the organisers are pleased to announce the creation of Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Qassimi International Prize for the best paper in urban planning to the value of $5,000.

We are also pleased to announce the continuation of the RICS Foundation prize in the GCC author category to the value of 7,500 UAE Dirhams.

This year, the SUPS 5 Best Paper Committee has had a difficult task in deciding between papers of outstanding quality in the International category covering several different areas of research. We would like to commend:

  • Mr Baris Der-Petrossian, UN Consultant, Vienna, for his excellent review paper on the Impact of Urban Functions on the Natural Resources
  • Mr Gheorghe Multescu, Research Scholar, South Bank University, London, for his original contribution to the field of Institutional Development & Capacity Building through Participatory Planning Processes
  • Professor Stanley McGreal, Ulster University, Belfast, for his outstanding paper on the role of Real Estate in Urban Development and Regeneration Strategies

SUPS 5 Best Paper Committee has decided however to award the Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Quassimi International Prize to an exceptional paper providing an original contribution to meeting the challenges of Spatial & Urban Development in Conditions of Conflict & Structural Uncertainty.

We would like therefore to award the Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Qassemi international prize to Dr Ali Shaat, MOPIC, for his paper on "Spatial Planning Challenges in Palestine".

After careful consideration of papers that could be considered under the GCC authored category, the SUPS 5 Best Paper Committee has decided to defer The RICS Foundation prize to next year.

We look forward to a greater participation of both International & GCC authors for the Best Paper prizes in the Sixth Sharjah Urban Planning Symposium next year.
